Welcome to the world of cycling!

My new machine!

I entered the world of cycling this week with my new Merida 40D mountain bike, bought after lots and lots of searching and price comparisons around the city. I have not ridden on the road for many years, so my trainer says to take it slow. He recommends riding loops on the flat to get used to riding on the road. My first ride was on Friday - the day after buying it, of course! I did a gentle 7km around the neighborhood. Then today I went out for an evening ride before sunset, and added on a few kilometres to make it an easy 11km. Took me about 40 mins at a gentle pace and with a bit of wind. Gosh, that's considerably slower than it takes many runners to go the same distance! Still lots of work to do on the biking side, but thoroughly enjoying my first intro to cycling. The padded shorts are great, but I need a cycling shirt (for the pockets), cleats (my sneakers slip on the pedals) and gloves (my palms get quite sore after a while). Once I'm confident I intend to hit the trails. Already registered for two fun rides - 10km and 20km in April and May.
