Trail series race no.5
The final race in the Cape Summer Trail series was held on Wed 17th Feb at Blomendal Estate, with sections run in the Tygerberg Nature Reserve. It was an 8km race with a hectically steep hill in the first 2km or so. I walked most of the way! But I didn't feel bad because everyone around me was walking too:-)
It was a beautiful race and a nice way to end the series. Jeep track but quite a bit of single track as well, with some steep and rocky sections. I had a great run and enjoyed the food afterwards. Bloemendal Estate has a special runner's menu on days like these. Unfortunately it got much too cold to stick around for prize giving. They usually start the prize giving once all the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd places) in each category are in, but this time many runners were caught in the dark, and I think they were too concerned about safety to start proceedings. Slower long course runners set out at 6pm (instead of 6.30pm) but many of them still got caught in the darkness, some without appropriate night running gear (e.g. head flashlight).
Overall, a lovely series with superb organization as usual and I was happy and proud to receive my series medal, for which I worked so hard for - a total of 5 races for it! I think I will give the trail running a bit of a break until the Cape Winter Trail Series. The uneven, rocky and technical terrain has caused a few running injuries, and I think I need to give them a bit of a rest and stick to road running for now. I'll compromise by going for the occasional hike and maybe a bit of straightforward jeep track running in Cecilia Forest or Constantia Nek.
